Any time you have an issue with a tooth inside your mouth, it is imperative that you have it evaluated and treated by your dentist as soon as possible. Many people avoid going to the dentist if they have a problem because they are scared of the pain that they will feel. However, what your dentist – every dentist – wants dental patients to understand is that infected teeth are painful, but the solutions to alleviate the pain are not! Trauma, injury, decay, and/or infection to a tooth makes the tooth susceptible to dying. Many times, the method of addressing these issues is through a root canal procedure.
Root canals are not painful! Many people have misconceptions about root canals because the “pain” that they associate with the root canal is misplaced. It is the infected tooth that is painful, not the solution to correct the problem. An infected tooth is incredibly painful; many people describe an infected tooth as the worst pain they have ever endured. Damaged and infected teeth hurt because the nerves and roots inside the tooth are being affected. If left untreated, the pain will become insufferable and the damage tooth great for the tooth to be saved.
Root canals are done under local anesthesia so that your pain and discomfort are alleviated. The procedure involves opening the tooth in order to reach the infection, removing the infection from within the tooth, cleaning the tooth and treating it with antibiotics, filling the tooth, and then sealing it to protect against further damage. This procedure is a relatively simple procedure, and it can be completed in just a single visit. That means, that the sooner you make an appointment for a root canal, the sooner your pain is relieved.
